Midsommar Title Sequence

Midsommar Title Sequence

Reimagined

For this project, I chose to create the title sequence for the film, Midsommar, which is a 2019 folk horror film written and directed by Ari Aster. The film is dressed up as a harmless midsummer festival, but it turns out to be a sinister film featuring a cult practicing Scandinavian paganism, with dire consequences for the protagonists of the film.

The concept behind this design was to create something that seems light, bright, and harmless and give it a sense of dread. In the film, Ari Aster does that with bright visuals contrasting with the horrific events and themes seen in the film. With the title sequence, I wanted to give the same feel, without actually showcasing the horror aspect of the film, so that the audience is caught off guard. I wanted to highlight the bright visuals through flowers, vines, and naturalistic elements. I wanted to give an unsettling feeling with the unnatural vibrant colours and the background music, which I composed with a ukulele and edited to sound a little strange and eerie when combined with the visuals of the title sequence.
